Excellent and Rare Cased and Engraved Merwin Hulbert & Co. Single Action Revolver,
by Hopkins & Allen
Serial no. 3628, .38 centerfire caliber, 5 shot scoop-fluted cylinder, 3 1/2-inch
ribbed barrel, profusely engraved in an unusual pattern of scroll and floral motifs, with
borders; top of barrel rib with Hopkins & Allen maker, address and patent date
markings; left side of frame with Merwin Hulbert & Co. and NEW YORK U.S.A.; right side
of frame with caliber marking; nickel-plated, with case-hardened hammer and trigger;
checkered hard rubber grips. Leather-covered wood case with blind and gold-tooled embossed
exterior, and with blue silk banner in lid; rosewood cartridge block with obsolete
cartridges; lining of burgundy satin.
Condition: Excellent. 95% nickel; 80% case-hardening; grips
excellent; case excellent, light wear on exterior.
Note: This pattern embellishment, primarily hand-engraved, as opposed to punched
motifs, seldom observed on Merwin Hulbert & Co. handguns.
