A Historic Colt Paterson No. 3 Belt Model Revolver, Used by Deputy Sheriff Alexander
McLeod in the Caroline Incident, 1837
Serial no. 603, .31 percussion caliber, 5 shots, 5 1/2 inch barrel with standard
"Patent Arms M'g Co Paterson N-J Colt's Pt." marrking, centaur roll engraved
cylinder scene; 603 on breech of barrel, back of cylinder, bottom of wedge, left side of
trigger, cylinder turning ring, and washer, and on left grip panel at butt; blued finish,
with case-hardened frame and hammer, the hammer made without knurling on spur; varnished
select walnut grips.
Condition: Very good. 15% blue on barrel; 10% on cylinder; balance
fading to brown and gray; wear, nicks and pitting, primarily on cylinder and barrel;
frame, hammer and gripstraps with gray patina and light pitting. Grips with 50% varnish,
nicks and wear. Serial number markings on parts in addition to those indicated, but
revolver not taken further apart.
Note: McLeod was for five years Deputy Sheriff of the District of Niagara, comprising
three counties in Upper Canada.
Provenance: Accompanied by documentation indicating involvement in the Caroline Affair,
historic confrontation on the border between the U.S. and Canada, December 29-30, 1837.

sheets, most with hand written narrative, from same archive, under category
