U.S. Springfield Model 1847 Cavalry Percussion Musketoon
.69 caliber, 26-inch round barrel with two brass bands and three-leaf sights. Breech
marked: V/P/[eaglehead]/1859. Lock marked: [spread eagle]/U.S./Spring/field/1853. Standard
walnut stock with brass triggerguard and buttplate. Saddle ring and bar. Steel ramrod with
scarce security chain [added at the Frankford arsenal when barrel was rifled]. Faded
cartouche.
Condition: Excellent for this model with scattered wear and minor
marks to wood.
Note: Only 334 of this model were altered in 1859 and this is no doubt one of the
finest surviving specimens [see February, 1994 Gun Report for an in depth discussion of
these musketoons by author Peter Schmidt].
