Cased Pair of 109 Bore Percussion Travelling Pistols with Folding Bayonets by Joseph
Egg & Sons, London, c. 1835
Flared two-stage cannon barrels with swivel ramrods and spring bayonets (marked I.L.),
scroll-engraved octagonal breeches marked JOSEPH EGG & SONS 1 PICCADILLY, LONDON on
left sides and mounted with bayonet releases on right sides, scroll-engraved hammers with
push-on half-cock safeties, finely checkered walnut grips (each marked 144 above gripcaps)
set with oval silver escutcheon plates, and finished with scroll and floral engraved
gripcaps with concealed compartments; WD marked ball mold (No. 109), brass and iron
accessory rod with brass loading tip concealing a ball screw, turned boxwood cap-box,
small leather pouch, Macassar ebony mounted nipple-wrench (wood with split), key, the
whole contained within the original green baise-lined mahogany case mounted with round
brass escutcheon plate on lid (vacant), and set with a Joseph Egg & Sons paper label
on inside of lid.
Condition: Excellent, barrels and breeches retain traces of original
finish in protected areas, with a fine aged light gray patina overall, excellent wood,
excellent casing and accessories
Note: Joseph Egg, nephew of Durs Egg, partner of Heny Tatham (1801-1814). Stockel lists
Joseph Egg at 1 Piccadilly, London after 1814, and as Joseph Egg and Company, 1832-1840.
