Rare 17th-Century Wheel Lock Mechanism for a Musket
The lockplate deeply etched and engraved with a wooded landscape with a castle in the
background and featuring a mounted hunter drawing his sword as his hounds bring down a
stag. Pan cover with engraved and gilt lion mask. Internal wheel. Dog engraved and pierced
in the form of a sea monster. Size: 8 3/8-inches long.
Condition: Very good to fine. Showing scattered age patina and
pitting with strong traces of gold-finish remaining, mainly around spindle, on pan cover
and on dog. Lock appears to function well.
