Scarce Cased Allen & Thurber Pepperbox
Serial no. 16, .31 caliber percussion, 4-inch barrel cluster, 6-shot, one barrel rib
with maker and CAST STEEL marking; bar hammer marked ALLEN'S PATENT/1837; scroll and
border engraved frame and backstrap, with matching nipple shield; blued, with browned
barrel cluster; varnished walnut grip with oval escutcheons. Varnished mahogany case lined
in green velvet; accessories of copper and brass powder flask, bullet mold, key,
projectiles and wood handled steel cleaning rod.
Condition: Excellent, with 95% brown on barrel cluster; 60% blue on
nipple shield, minor patina, mainly on backstrap; 90% case-hardening on hammer; 95%
varnish on grips with minor marks. Case excellent with minor exterior marks, light warpage
to lid; interior with light wear accessories fine. Case has J.G. Bolen's ? pasted to
bottom of box.
