Rare and Fine Cased Exhibition Quality Engraved Serial No. 1 W.W. Marston
Breechloading Pistol with Octagonal Barrel, Engraved by L.D. Nimschke
Serial no. 1 (on left side of frame and inside of each grip panel), .36 caliber
percussion, 6-inch octagonal barrel, blued steel and case-hardened hammer; varnished
select walnut grips. Numeral 3 stamped on back of hammer and on inside of triggerguard.
Hand-engraved inscription on backstrap beginning behind rear sight: W.W. MARSTON PATENTED
1850 NEW-YORK; profusely scroll and border engraved frame and hammer, with charging lion
motif within scrolls on left side of frame; dragon motif at top of backstrap; kidney motif
at top of breech; superbly formed and embellished hammer of elegant design and with
dolphin motif. Varnished mahogany case, lined in green velvet, with velvet-covered
cartridge block, as well as wood-handled brass cleaning rod, cap tin, key and 12
distinctive cartridges.
Condition: Excellent. 90% blue on barrel; balance age brown and gray
patina; 55% blue; 50% case-hardening on hammer, fading; grips with 95% varnish. Minor
dents on butt and chip from left panel. Case excellent; two repaired cracks on lid, light
nicks, wear; accessories fine.
Note: Rare No. 1, possibly made for the inventor.
