Cased Janssen Sons & Co. Belgian Vest Pocket Revolver, with Leather Traveling
Business Case Gold-Embossed "R. BLANCHARD RAFFLES./DEC. 25th 1870"
.22 caliber rimfire, 6 shot, 1 5/16-inch round barrel; engraved, the topstrap inscribed
"JANSSEN SONS & Co."; FJ & Co on right side of frame. Blued, with
checkered ebony grips. With fabric-covered wood case, the interior lid blind-tooled:
"Katz Brothers Ltd./SINGAPORE". With unopened box of 50 obsolete .22 short
rimfire cartridges by Remington Arms Co. Accompanied by elegant leather-covered business
traveling case; the cover flap gold-embossed: R. BLANCHARD RAFFLES./DEC. 25TH 1870."
Measuring 14- x 11- x 4-inches; blind-tooled; the brass lock stamped: PARKINS &
GOTTO/LONDON. Gold-embossed trademark on inside compartment with leather-covered lid,
including maker's name and Oxford St., London, address. Body of case with three
compartments, each with leather lids; one compartment including removable mahogany tray
and glass ink bottle with silver-plated lid. Key on leather strap attached to traveling
case handle.
Condition: Fine. Light wear to pistol case and to traveling case;
mahogany box in small compartment needs minor regluing of bottom.
Note: Accompanied by newspaper article from The Observer, Singapore, August 15, 1965,
with article about Sir T.S. Raffles, credited with founding colonial Singapore as a
British protectorate. Case may have belonged to a descendent of T.S. Raffles.
