E. Lefaucheux, Paris, Pinfire Single Action Revolver of the Type Purchased for Use by
Union Troops, During the Civil War
Serial no. 33805, .44 pinfire caliber, 6 shot cylinder, 6 3/16 inch part round, part
octagonal barrel with maker name on top; maker name and markings also on both sides of
frame. Blued finish, with varnished walnut grips. Lanyard ring on butt, attached to swivel
on steel buttcap.
Condition: Very good; traces blue; balance brown patina with light
pitting; front sight missing; grips with wear and 30% varnish.
Note: Approximately 12,000 Lefaucheaux pinfire revolvers of this type were purchased,
by the Union, for Civil War issue; it was the only metallic cartridge revolver acquired by
either the Northern or Southern governments, for issue. It was also the first handgun of
U.S. Army issue using internally primed ammunition.
