Rare 10 Gauge Winchester Model 1879 Match Grade Hammer Double Barrel Shotgun
Serial no. 7739 [lower tang] 2076 [bottom of barrel rib], 10 gauge, 32-inch twist
barrels, the top rib marked: Winchester Repeating Arms Co. (MATCH GUN) New Haven Conn.
U.S.A. Birmingham proofs. Low-profile hammers. Foliate scroll-engraved frame with hunting
pictorial vignettes. Locks marked: Winchester Repeating Arms CO./Match Gun.
Scroll-engraved fore-end tip, breech, floor and triggerguard. Checkered pull-off walnut
fore-end and pistol-grip stock. Checkered horn buttplate.
Condition: Good to very good for this model. Barrels with mottled
gray patina with scattered minor spots of pitting overall. Action shows 30-40% mostly
faint case colors. Wood very good with only minor marks present. Fore-end shows losses to
left edge. Bores are bright with right barrel showing some minor spotting.
Note: A large national demand for double barrel shotguns led Winchester to import
British guns made by C.G. Bonehill, W.C. McEntree, Redman, and W.C. Scott & Sons. The
examples imported in 1878 were marked with the British maker's names, the ones imported in
1879 bore the Winchester markings alone.
