A Rare and Massive California Market Punt Gun, Marked J.P. Clabrough & Brother,
San Francisco, c. 1860
8 gauge, 32-inch patent breech barrel, part round, part multi-faceted, part-octagonal;
steel post front sight; unusually large percussion lock, marked on lockplate J.P.
CLABROUGH & BRO. On barrel breech, J.P. CLABROUGH & BRO. SAN FRANCISCO LAMINATED
STEEL. Browned, with blued lock and mounts, including steel buttplate, triggerguard and
ramrod thimbles; border engraving on steel parts, including barrel at breech and patent
breech system; horn fore-end cap; hickory ramrod with brass and pewter mounts. Checkered
walnut stock with large and generous proportions overall. Weight of 17 pounds; overall
length 49-inch.
Condition: Very good. Brown patina, pitting; wear and mars to stock.
Chip from stock by front of lock; crack on left side opposite lock; minor cracks at butt.
Note: Clabrough, of Montgomery Street, San Francisco, renowned as gunsmiths, and for
importing English shotguns. Gun likely made to order for Clabrough by Birmingham gunmaker.
