Scarce U.S. Model 1808 Contract Flintlock Musket by T. French
.74 caliber, 44 5/8-inch barrel with three iron bands. No bayonet lug. Breech marked:
[oval with eaglehead/CT (for contract)]/US. Lock mechanism marked: American spread eagle
over US in an oval appearing in front of hammer; aft of hammer, marked vertically:
1809/Canton[in a curve]/French. Standard pattern cherrywood stock, the left side with a
trefoil cartouche marked: V/CW (Charles Williams). Steel ramrod marked US. Sling mounts.
Condition: Very good. Metal showing dark age patina with pitting near
lock. Wood excellent for this model, showing wear with minor dents and bruises.
Note: This scarce musket is in outstanding, untouched original condition. The marking
on the lockplate slightly differ from the six variations described in Reilly, page 83.
This is one of the early martial muskets as shown by the date and markings and obviously
was used by the U.S. Army.
