"US SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1903 WITH ULTRA-RARE OFFSET BENNETT SCOPE MOUNT ADAPTERS. SN 457594. Cal. 30-06. Usual configuration with 24" bbl dated "4-11" with standard front sight. Mounted in a nicely figured, uncheckered American walnut full length stock with grasping grooves and upper handguard. It has the machined split front band/bayonet lug with stacking swivel and a grooved middle band with sling loop and a corresponding sling loop in buttstock. Left side of wrist has a crisp "J.F.C." cartouche in a rectangle with a checkered buttplate with trap. The movable part of the rear sight has been removed and a dovetail scope base attached with two screws. There is a front scope base attached with two screws to top of bbl through a slot through the hand guard and a recess on left side to reach the scope base screw. Front & rear bases have Bennett Patent offset adapters which has the "1910" patent date on the rear mount. These offset adapters are mounted with a Winchester A5 scope in a Type 2 adjustable rear mount. According to The Springfield 1903 Rifles, Brophy, pp. 501-505, this mounting system was one of the more successful early sniper rifles. Few survive today and, in fact, this may be the only one extant. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine. Metal retains most of its fine orig arsenal finish with orig blue somewhat mottled on receiver. Trigger guard & floorplate have only light edge wear. Wood is sound with minor handling & storage marks and shows a fine hand worn patina. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. Scope retains 95-97% strong orig factory blue with crisp clear optics. 31996 JR254 (8,500-12,500)"
