"GERMAN LUFTWAFFE MARKED 660/1939 CODE STEYR MODEL 98 MAUSER. SN 9058. Cal. 8X57 mm. Rare Mauser rifle with 24" tapered rnd bbl, barleycorn front sight, 1,800 meter rear sight & mounted in a 1-pc walnut stock with grasping grooves & pointed semi-pistol grip with long handguard. It has sling swivels in the normal position as well as on left side. Bayonet lug band is of different shape with cleaning rod. Right side of buttstock has the Nazi eagle "L" (Luftwaffe proof) and two eagle "WaA623" Waffenampts. Accompanied by an orig leather sling. These rifles were produced by Steyr in 1938 & 1939 and according to Mauser Military Rifles of the World, 4th Edition, Ball, were only made for the Luftwaffe. They were referred to as the G29o. PROVENANCE: Doug Smith Collection. CONDITION: Very fine, all visible numbers are matching with numerous WaA623 Waffenampts. Overall retains about 95% orig factory blue, thinned on exposed bbl with some thinning on sharp edges of receiver. Wood is sound with a series of small gouges on right side of wrist and light handling & use marks elsewhere. Mechanics are crisp, strong bright bore.
