12 Gauge Fletcher Hammer Snap-underlever Double Barrel Shotgun with case.
Serial no. 7704. 12 gauge. Shortened replacement 29 1/4-inch Damascus barrels. Game rib
marked: Adams & Co. 52 Finsbury Pavement, London. Doll's head extension on rib.
Case-hardened snap-underlever with thumb-pad on right side of triggerguard. Rebounding
back-action locks with high hammers. Action and locks 50-60% engraved with fine foliate
scroll. Percussion fences. Flat-topped checkered straight grip stock of straight grained
walnut. Vacant silver oval. Steel buttplate. Flat-topped checkered wedge-fastened splinter
fore-end with horn inlay at tip. Leather trunk case with single brass lock. Red baize
interior with C. B. Vaughan leather label.
Condition: Fine, as partially redone. Barrels show 98% rebrowned
finish. Bright bores. Action / barrels show slight looseness. Metal shows silver-gray
patina with traces of case colors in protected areas. Refinished stock shows light
handling marks. Refinished stock shows two repairs at tip. Refreshed checkering. Case in
good condition. Exterior shows extensive scuffing. Handle has been refastened with rivets.
Copper bands at two corners of lid. Losses to other corner. Interior shows some tears with
staining.
Note: Note: Since the barrels have Birmingham pre-1887 black powder proof marks and
Adams & Co. occupied the above address between 1881 and 1892. The barrels were likely
replaced during the interval from 1881 and 1887.
