"HALF-STOCK TARGET RIFLE. SN NSN. Exceptionally fine target rifle with 32-1/2" full oct 48 Cal rifled bbl marked "R CONSTABLE PHILADELPHIA". American percussion rifle mounted in engraved silver, a fine example of the engraver's art. Handsome rifle made by one of the best early American makers. Stock has checkered wrist and features bone nose cap. Silver toe plate, rear ramrod ferrule, and 4-pc patchbox all profusely engraved, as are iron trigger guard, bbl tang, and butt plate. Engraved percussion lock marked "Constable". Richard Constable was successor to Booth & Co., operating from 1817-1851. PROVENANCE: This fine rifle was sold as part of "The Valuable and Unusual Collection of Rare Firearms and Kindred Weapons" gathered by Mr. Fred E. Hines of Dorchester, MA. The auction was held at the Walpole Galleries in New York, May 9, 1924. this rifle is pictured on p. 58 of their 1924 catalog as item #323. One copy of auction catalog pages accompanies this rifle. The collection then had the reputation of being one of the finest in the U.S. R. Gabel Collection.
