Superb French Silver-Mounted Carved Ivory Flask c.18th century
The fine tapered intaglio-carved ivory flask, with three friezes, each depicting a
different scene, the bottom with group of hunting dogs on the scent, with mounted hunters
in the background; the middle scene Diana, Goddess of the Hunt with a bow, seated in a
chariot, pulled by two stags surrounded by highly-detailed woodland background; the top
depicting a putto with a dead hare and an eagle in clouds with dead hare in its claws.
Surmounted by a band of oakleaves. Rouletting beaded bands flank a finely engraved and
banded coin silver ferrule with spring-loaded charging lever. Cabbage leaf finial base
terminating with scalloped and ribbed spout. Shell pattern silver cap. Single silver ring
mount. An exceptional and museum quality carved ivory flask. Length: 11 1/2-inches.
Condition: Excellent with light age patina.
