Fine Engraved Silver Pistol Priming Flask [dated 1574, perhaps 16th-century]
The triangular form silver flask with engraved pictorial panels, The scenes on both
sides are from plaquettes by the well-known artist-goldsmith of Nuremberg, Peter Flotner
from his series representing the first twelve German kings. The obverse of flask with
figure of Ariovistus who was defeated by Caesar in 58 B.C. The reverse with scene of
Arminius holding the severed head of Quintilius Varus, a reference to the German defeat of
two Roman Legions in 9 A.D. in the Teutoberg Forest of Germany.The shield with the arms of
Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn, Prince Bishop of Wurzburg. Coat-of-arms: The shield bears
three crowns, the arms of Sweden. The shield on the left side of the knight's head bears
the arms of the Bishopric of Wurzburg quartering those of Echter von Mespelbrunn. The side
panels with richly engraved laced strapwork. Four ring mounts. Spout with spring-loaded
cap. Size: 2 1/2-inches X 4-inches.
Condition: Excellent with light age wear and patina.
