Rare Saxon Powder Flask and Cartridge Pouch Ensemble, Late 16th/early 17th-Century
Comprising: 1) Horn flask of flattened form with incised decoration; the front with
bunches of fruit around an escutcheon bearing the arms of the Elector of Saxony the sides
with interwoven banding; the back with bunches of fruit and C scrolls. Simple blued steel
mounts including spring-mounted top with measure spout. Back with belt hook. Retaining
period gilt thread and purple silk cord with one large tassel remaining. 2) Black leather
cartridge pouch, the banded body containing a leather-bound wooden form with compartments
for five cartridges. Flap fastening with a steel button. Lower edge with applied panel
equipped with iron fitting for flask hook. Length overall 18 inches.
Condition: Flask excellent and showing one area of worming. Mounts
retain most blue finish with light spotting. Pouch with scuffs, re-enforcement to back and
minor tears. Tassel with frayed cordage.
