Rare Cased, Inscribed and Engraved Merwin Hulbert & Co. Double Action Pocket
Revolver, with Extra Barrel
Serial no. 3694 (698 on extra barrel), .38 centerfire caliber, 5-shot fluted cylinder,
Merwin Hulbert & Co., address and patent marking on top of barrel rib of both 5 1/2-
and extra 2 3/4-inch barrels; engraved in Merwin Hulbert & Co. style with punched
marks, light enamel on longer barrel, and with game bird panel scene on left side of
frame; backstrap inscribed: PRESENTED to HARRY ALAMAN June 13" 1885; inside of
gripstrap inscribed: By N & WRR Employees. Nickel-plated with gold-plated cylinder and
case-hardened hammer, trigger and triggerguard; mother-of-pearl grips. In leather-covered
box contour lined with red satin.
Condition: Fine to excellent. 90% nickel, fading; worn on backstrap;
45% gold on cylinder; tracking lines on cylinder; grips with fading color. Mechanism needs
adjustment; note 698 on extra barrel. Case with wear on exterior, loose hinge; interior
lining stained and frayed around revolver and extra barrel.
Note: Barrel believed contemporary and made specifically to accompany this revolver, in
this case. This type casing generally considered as of Hartley & Graham type.
Provenance: Presentation from employees of the Northern and Western Railroad Company.
