Percussion Half-stock Plains Rifle Believed to Have Been Property of "Pa"
Hatfield, of the Hatfield-McCoy Feud
.36 caliber, 37-inch octagonal barrel, conversion from flintlock; light engraving on
lock; open sights; brass buttplate and triggerguard and rear ramrod ferrule; pewter
fore-end cap; double set triggers. Plain walnut stock, with checkered cheekpiece.
Condition: Good. Brown and gray steel, pitting and patina; replaced
nipple and bolster. Stock cleaned; pewter fore-end partially damaged; replaced ramrod.
Note: Accompanied by extensive background information on the Hatfield-McCoy Feud, and
with data indicating the rifle was received by the present owner's father, Dr. Robert C.
Lawson, "for medical services rendered to one of the Hatfield clan. [The rifle] has
been in our family since the early 1940s." Several members of the Lawson family
resided in the same vicinity of West Virginia and Kentucky, with some of the Hatfields and
McCoys as neighbors. According to family tradition, the rifle is "Pa Hatfield's
gun."
