Historic and Rare U.S.-Marked Contract Brass-Mounted Flintlock Kentucky Rifle, Signed
J. Dickert on Barrel, c. 1800
Approximately .60 caliber, 41 3/4-inch octagonal barrel signed "J [crossed arrow
and possibly tomahawk motif] Dickert" in script on top flat of breech; US on left
angle flat of breech in large letters; open steel rear sight blade; front sight brass
blade on brass base, dovetailed at muzzle; no marking on lockplate; brass mountings to
what appears to be walnut stock, including pierced patchbox, brass star motif inlaid on
concave cheekpiece; inlaid brass C scrolls behind cheekpiece; incised carved border on
either side of fore-end; brass inlaid fore-end bottom strip from triggerguard to rear
ramrod ferrule; brass plate mounted beneath lip of cheekpiece; brass sideplate; small
silver Liberty head coin dated 1829 pinned into position as thumbpiece escutcheon; 1/4
moon brass barrel pin escutcheons; brass fore-end cap; hickory ramrod.
Condition: Fine. Brown patina to steel with light pitting, more
pronounced on barrel breech at touchhole; mellow patina to brass; face of frizzen refaced;
bore seems to have been shot out and presently appears as smoothbore. Stock fine; possible
old restock minor chips, nicks; small crack on left side of toe.
Note: Rifles from this series are believed to have been carried by the Lewis &
Clark Corps of Discovery exploration of the West, c. 1804-06. Contracts were let c. 1792
through 1809, and were to various makers, including J. Dickert.
