An Elegant Flintlock Kentucky Rifle by S. Miller, with Brass Patchbox and Incised
Carving, c. 1800-05
.48 caliber, 43 3/4-inch octagonal browned barrel, engraved on top of breech in script
"S+Miller"; lightly engraved lock marked KETLAND; open rear sight dovetailed
near breech; brass front sight blade on steel base dovetailed at muzzle. Single scroll
trigger. Brass mounts, including classic Kentucky triggerguard, patchbox, ramrod thimbles,
fore-end cap, buttplate, toeplate, and sideplate. German silver thumbpiece escutcheon and
eight-pointed star cheekpiece inlay. Hickory ramrod with twist decoration. Steel trigger
plate. Oil-stained tiger stripe maple fullstock, with scroll incised carving at butt.
Condition: Very good. Steel with brown patina, dents, pitting, latter
primarily on lock and at breech of barrel. Brass and German silver with mellow patina.
Stock with wear and mars, minor chips; minor wood repair at front of patchbox mount; crack
at forend in ramrod channel and light repair by lock at barrel breech. Old reconversion to
flintlock. Rifling appears shot out, at least at muzzle.
