Flintlock Kentucky Rifle by John Derr, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, together with Powder
Horns, Game Bag and Accessories c. 1818
.55 caliber buck and ball, flintlock, 41 1/2-inch part round, part octagonal barrel,
marked on top flat near breech, JOHN DERR; lock without markings; open sights; striped and
varnished curly maple stock with extensive mounts of brass and silvered German silver,
including inlaid strip on comb of stock and plate on bottom of fore-end; incised rococo
carving to rear of cheekpiece brass patchbox with release a brass plate on toe of stock.
Powder horns of approximately 11- and 8-inch lengths, with wood stoppers, powder measuring
device of tin, small leather pouch, steel single cavity bullet mold, horn-handled patch
knife and cloth and leather game bag.
Condition: Very good; pitting on steel parts, repair to upper half of
hammer; re-faced frizzen; stock with wear and mars; chips missing around lock, crack
repair on opposite side. Accessories in matching condition, and show wear and use. Some
restoration around lock and wrist. John Derr was engaged as a gunmaker and blacksmith,
with a career spanning 1810-44, in Lancaster Township, Pennsylvania. Accompanied by
background and display material.
