Cased 20 Gauge Holland & Holland Royal Double Barrel Shotgun
Serial No. 8534, 20 gauge. 28 1/8 inch Damascus barrels. Game rib marked: Winner of all
the "Field" rifle trials 1883. Case hardened first model Royal bar action
engraved with fine rose and scroll. Underside marked The Royal Patented Safety Hammerless.
Scott-patent gas checks. Automatic safety. Extractor. Finely checkered straight grip stock
of semi-figured walnut. Horn buttplate. Vacant oval. Finely checkered splinter fore-end
with Anson-type release.
Leather trunk case with blue baize interior. Maker's label.
Miscellaneous loading tools including: roll crimper, powder measure and oil bottle by
Hawksley, rammer, bone striker container with spare strikers and cleaning rod.
Condition: Fine. Barrels show 90-95% browning with bold pattern. Left
barrel shows a repaired dent. Bores show areas of pitting. Right barrel shows large pits
in front of chamber. Extractor screw is missing. Action shows 75-80% case colors.
Triggerguard shows a brown patina. Stock shows nicks, scratches and areas of raised grain.
Well defined checkering. Fore-end shows some scuffing to the checkering and small chip to
edge. Case in poor condition with losses to interior, loose partitions, missing handle and
edge of lid.

comb: 1 7/8 inches. Drop at heel: 3 1/2 inches. Weight: 5 pounds 14 ounces.
Provenance: The original owner was Peter Cooper Hewitt (1861-1921) son of the former
mayor of New York and the inventor of the fluorescent lamp.
