Fine American Halfstock Single Shot Percussion Target Rifle by J. Wurfflein,
Philadephia
.40 caliber, 30 1/4-inch heavy octagonal barrel with rebated muzzle and steel
under-rib, German silver blade front sight and blued elevation rear sight. Barrel marked:
J. Wurfflein, Philada. Two inlaid silver bands at breech. Case-hardened tang, flip-up tang
peep sight, hammer, lock mechanism, patchbox and all furniture. Lock marked: J. Wurfflein,
Philada. Double-set triggers. Beautiful select walnut stock with checkered wrist and cheek
rest. Scrolled triggerguard. German silver fore-end cap, wedge escutcheons and two oval
escutcheons, one example on left wrist inscribed: G.Gilpin. Hardwood ramrod with brass tip
and wormer.
Condition: Fine to excellent for this type of rifle. Barrel with
smooth brown patina with scattered light spotting. Vibrant color remaining on
case-hardened elements. Excellent wood with mellow age patina. Overall, a very fine
example of this type of rifle.
Note: John Wurfflein, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1835-1900. This famous family were
makers of fine percussion derringers, hunting and target rifles.
