Very Rare U.S. Springfield Model 1855 Rifled Carbine
.54 caliber, 22-inch round barrel finished bright with single steel band and standard
three-position folding-leaf rear sight. Breech marked: V/P/[eaglehead]. Tang marked: 1855.
Case-hardened lock marked: [eagle]/U.S./Spring/field/1854. Standard walnut stock with no
inspector cartouches. Brass fore-end cap. Swivel ramrod. Swivel sling ring on
triggerguard. Steel buttplate marked: U.S.
Condition: Very good to fine for this model. Grey metal with
scattered light pitting and age patina. Traces of silvered case-hardening remaining on
hammer and lock. Wood excellent with minor marks present. An exceptional example of this
rare model, perhaps the finest in existence.
Note: Only 1000 of these carbines were manufactured by the Springfield Armory.
