U.S. Springfield Model 1855 Rifle Musket, Dated 1858
.58 caliber, 40-inch round barrel with three steel bands. Ladder-type military sights.
Breech marked: /P/[eaglehead]/1858. Lock with Maynard tape primer system. Lock marked:
[spread eagle on door]/U.S./Springfield/1858. Polished steel. Standard walnut stock with
two crisp cartouches. Bottom of buttstock marked V. Brass fore-end cap. Steel mountings.
Steel ramrod. Sling mounts.
Condition: Excellent. Steel in unpolished bright metal with light
wear overall. Wood excellent with a few minor bruises.
Note: 47,115 of this model were manufactured. It was the first U.S. martial model to
fire the .58 caliber Minie ball [see Flayderman 9A-307].
