Rare U.S. Springfield Altered Sharps Model 1870, Type II Breechloading Military Rifle
Serial no. 227, .50-70 caliber, 35 1/2-inch polished steel barrel with pedestal front
sight and ladder-type military sight with two steel barrel bands. Barrel numbered at
breech 227. Case-hardened drop-block action. Tang numbered 227. Lever latch marked
"W". Standard walnut stock with crisp ESA cartouche [E.S. Allen]. Steel ramrod
and sling mounts. U.S. marked buttplate.
Condition: Excellent. Polished steel barrel and mountings with light
grey patina. Vibrant case-hardening.
Note: This is one of the second type of these Springfield alterations; the Sharps frame
used was the1874 Sharps cartridge rifle without provision for the pellet primer system;
only 300 of this alteration were produced. [see Flayderman 5F-037]
