Lot 176 Detail
Scarce Burnside Third Model Breechloading Carbine
Serial no. 3175, .54 caliber, 21-inch round barrel with standard military sights.
Marked "M" at breech. Blued finish. Martial blue frame and breechblock. Right
side of frame marked: Burnside Rifle Co./Providence R.I. Saddle ring and bar. Walnut
stocks with faint inspector's cartouche. Sling mount.
Condition: Excellent for this model. Barrel retaining over 95% finish
on barrel. Strong traces of martial blue remaining on frame and lever. Wood excellent with
minor wear and marks.
Note: Third model Burnside carbines are difficult to find as 2000 were produced in the
Civil War and were heavily used; production was discontinued until perfected in the issue
of the refined fourth model. This example is exceptional for a Third model.
Estimate: $3000 - $5000
