Rare Burnside Transition Breechloading Percussion Carbine, with Features of Third and
Fourth Models
Serial no. 1028, .54 caliber, 21-inch round brown-finished barrel with standard
military issue sights. Breech marked: W/P. Frame with bright martial blue finish.
Case-hardened breechblock, lever latch, hammer and buttplate. Saddle ring and bar.
"H" inspector stamps. Lock marked: Burnside Rifle Co./Providence R.I. Upper tang
drilled and threaded for a peep sight. Standard walnut stocks with sling swivel. This
example, while appearing to be a third model but close examination shows that it has the
breechblock with the hinged and pivoting feature found on the fourth model.
Condition: Excellent. Retaining approximately 80-85% finish with
scattered wear and age patina. Faded case-hardening. Wood near mint with a few minor
marks.
