Rare U.S. Sharps Model 1855 Breechloading Carbine
Serial no. 17422, .54 caliber, 21-inch barrel with original military ladder-type rear
sight. Breech marked: U.S./J.H./P/H. Drop-block action with Maynard tape primer system
with door marked: Edward Maynard/Patented 1845. Tang marked: Sharps/Patent/1848/17422.
Saddle ring and bar. Walnut stock with brass barrel band, patchbox and buttplate. No
cartouche on wood.
Condition: Very good to fine. Metal with grey-brown age patina and
scattered fine pitting. Slight traces of silvered case-hardening remaining in protected
areas. Rear sight needs "V" slide. Wood very good, showing a few dents and
blemishes. Minor sliver chip to right fore-end.
Note: Only 700 of this were manufactured and very few have survived as most were used
in the opening days and weeks of the Civil War.
