Lot 210 Detail
Rare and Exceptional Peabody Breechloading Carbine Made by the Providence Tool
Company, Providence, Rhode Island
Unserialized. .52 caliber, 20-inch round barrel with pedestal front sight and
two-position flip-up rear sight. Blued finish. Saddle ring. Case-hardened barrel band,
hammer, saddle ring, frame, lock, breech lever and buttplate. Standard walnut stocks with
left side of wrist marked: W.C.
Condition: Excellent to mint and possibly unfired. Vibrant
case-hardening, A few insignificant fine scratches present on frame. Wood near mint with
no visible blemishes.
Note: The caliber is the largest of any Peabody known; Flayderman notes the .50-70
caliber but does not recognize the .52 caliber [see Flayderman 9B081]. These weapons were
made in the 1860s and 70s; there is no proof that any were purchased by the U.S. Army but
some were supplied to the New York and Massachusetts militias.
Estimate: $5000 - $6000
