Merrill First Type Breechloading Percussion Carbine with Patchbox in Buttstock
Serial no. 8350, .54 caliber, 22 1/8-inch round barrel with standard three-position
folding-leaf rear sight. Brown finish. Single brass band. Case-hardened breech lever
marked: J.H. Merrill Balto./Pat. July, 1856/8350. Lock marked: J.H. Merrill Balto./Pat.
July,1856./Apl 9 May 51-38-61. Standard walnut stock with brass triggerguard, patchbox and
buttplate. Saddle ring and bar. Crisp GDL inspector's cartouche.
Condition: Excellent to mint. Barrel retaining approximately 85-90%
finish with light wear and minor scratches present. Case-hardening thin and faded but
present. Wood excellent with a few minor dents and blemishes. An exceptional example of
this model.
