Rare Deluxe Engraved and Half-Gold-Plated Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine,
Engraved and Signed by L.D. Nimschke
Serial no. 99084, .44 centerfire caliber, 20-inch barrel, standard markings and
pivoting two-leaf rear sight. Nimschke scroll and border engraved on the frame, upper and
lower tang, carrier block and buttplate [numbered: 7377]; various pronounced decorative
motifs popular with Nimschke; two riband motifs on right side of frame. C. Ch. in script
within riband on left side of frame, initials of original owner. Signature L.D.N stamped
on lower tang, to left of serial number marking. Gold-plated, with nickel-plated lever;
blued barrel and magazine, and case-hardened hammer. Varnished select walnut stocks
[buttstock numbered 118333],
Condition: Very good to fine as configured. 15% gold-plating on
frame; traces on buttplate; traces nickel-plating on cocking lever. Light wear; steel
parts with light pitting (more pronounced on magazine tube and cocking lever) and brown
patina; 25% case-hardening on hammer. Period replacement buttstock [numbered 118333] with
repair at wrist on each side, with wood insert; crack in line with rear upper tang screw;
small crack on left side of fore-end; stocks with nicks, mars and wear, retaining 95%
varnish. Tiny casting imperfection on left side of frame within engraved border to left
sideplate. Screw missing from lower tang, between lever latch and serial number marking.
Buttplate a period replacement [numbered 7377].
