Exceptional Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine.
Serial no. 168928, .44 rimfire caliber altered by factory from centerfire, 20-inch
round barrel with standard two line maker, address and patent markings on top; blued, with
plain brass frame and buttplate; case-hardered cocking lever, buttplate and hammer;
standard carbine sights with three-piece sectional cleaning rod. Oil stained walnut
stocks. Accompanied by letter from Cody Firearms Museum.
Condition: Excellent to Mint. 99% blue. Two spots on top of barrel.
Brass with rich patina. 80% case-hardening on lever, 70% on buttplate with light surface
pitting. No. 168928 is in an exceptional state of preservation, and has no signs of having
ever been fired.
Note: Winchester factory records, in a letter from the Cody Firearms Museum, documents
no. 168928 as .44 centerfire caliber, with notation "August 18, 1898 changed to
Rim", received in warehouse May 7, 1891, shipped from warehouse August 18, 1898,
order number 2603.
