Fine and Rare Pipe-Cased Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver
Serial no. 141968, .31 caliber, 5 shot, 4-inch barrel with two-line maker and New York
City address within brackets, COLTS/PATENT on left side of frame; stagecoach cylinder roll
scene; blued, with case-hardened hammer, lever and frame; silver-plated brass gripstraps.
Varnished walnut grips. Leather covered wood pipe-casing, lined in black velvet; with
lidded compartment with ivory pull holding two lead projectiles; circular compartment with
ivory capbox with percussion caps; brass hinges and brass lock.
Condition: Fine to excellent. 98% finish; light tracking lines on
cylinder; sharp cylinder roll scene; 100% varnish on grips; silver tarnished. Minor
storage marks; light nicks on right side of barrel lug. Case fine; minor wear; appears to
be of period of manufacture of revolver.
Note: Comparison should be made with pipe-cased Model 1849 Pocket revolver no. 59826,
pictured in various texts, including R.L. Wilson, The Colt Engraving Book, volume I, p.
86. The pipe style is among the most rare of all Colt percussion firearms casings.
