Scarce U.S. Martially Marked Colt Third Model Dragoon Revolver, Cut for Third Type
Shoulder Stock and with Folding Leaf Rear Sights, Rare Corrosion Attributed to Human Blood
Serial no. 16958, .44 caliber percussion cylinder; 7 1/2-inch part round, part
octagonal barrel marked ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY with part of marking covered by
dovetailed folding leaf rear sight; German silver halfmoon profile front sight blade;
COLTS/PATENT/U.S. in tiny letters stamped on left side of frame; Texas Rangers and
Comanche Indian fight cylinder roll scene; blued with case-hardened hammer, loading lever
and frame; plain brass triggerguard strap; blued steel backstrap; frame cut for stock on
recoil shield, and with four-screws; oil-finished walnut grips. U.S. Ordnance inspector
stamping GGS within cartouche on left grip panel; right panel with WAT inspector stamping
in cartouche. Individual inspector letter stampings on some parts of C and M. Matching
number 6958 on bottom of wedge and on top of loading lever lug.
Condition: Very good to fine. Scattered blue and case-hardening;
largely overall gray patina, with blood-induced pitting and patina; cylinder with sharp
roll scene, partly covered with spotted blood-induced pitting and patina; cylinder safety
pins excellent; triggerguard strap with mellow patina; grips very good with nicks and
wear; some mars on butt. Very good bore.

on pages 73-77 and again on pages 91-96.
Note: Rare example of a revolver which, without the patina from blood, would be one of the
finest known examples of the Third Model Dragoon cut for shoulder stock attachment.
Mechanism, safety pins, cylinder scene and other details show virtually no use.
