Sharps-Borchhardt Model 1878 Single Shot Breechloading Long Range Target Rifle
Serial no. 328, .45 centerfire caliber, chamber 2-4/10-inch case length. 34-inch round
blued barrel with spirit-level wind-gauge front sight and tang-mounted Vernier long-range
peep sight. Barrel marked: Old Reliable/Sharps Rifle Co. Bridgeport, Conn. Case-hardened
breechblock, frame and lever. Set trigger. Checkered walnut fore-end with single wedge and
black ebonized cap, walnut side panels and pistol-grip buttstock with checkered hard
rubber buttplate. Rear sight bracket on top of buttstock. A rare American sporting rifle
and one of finest examples known. Sold together with copy of Sharps factory letter stating
that this gun was never sold or invoiced and was probably a factory 'test' gun or
demonstrator.
Condition: Excellent to mint. 90-95% finish with light fading to
case-hardening with some color remaining. Wood excellent with minor wear and bruises.
