Rare and Exceptional Experimental "Positive Cam" U.S. Springfield Model 1888
Trapdoor Rifle
Serial no. 415518, .45-70 caliber, 32 5/8-inch barrel with pedestal front sight and
Buffington rear sight. Marked at breech: V/P/[eaglehead]/P/J/A. Two barrel bands.
Case-hardened low-arch breechblock marked: U.S./Model/1888. Positive cam in breechblock,
the firing pin screw visible from right side of breechblock. Martial blued hammer and lock
marked: [spread eagle]/U.S./Springfield. Standard walnut stock with crisp SWP/1888
cartouche. Circle "P" and "O" cartouches behind tang. Conventional
cleaning rod. Sling mounts [see Flayderman 9A-388].
Condition: Excellent to mint. Approximately 95-98% finish with slight
wear to relief edges. Vibrant case-hardening. Excellent to mint stock with a few
insignificant marks. Bright bore. An exceptional and probably the best existing example of
the100 of these made.
