Scarce British-Type Greene Carbine by Massachusetts Arms Company
Serial no. 689, .54 caliber, 18-inch blued barrel with 16-sided hand grasp section.
Military ladder-type sights. British proofs. Case-hardened swivel breech action with
Maynard tape primer system. Saddle ring. Lock marked: [queen's crown]/VR/Mass.Arms
Co./U.S.A./1856. Trigger-type breech release. Standard walnut stock with steel mountings
and patchbox.
Condition: Excellent as partially refinished. Barrel retaining
approximately 99-100% of a reblued finish with minor spots of pitting present beneath
finish. Vibrant case-hardening. Pitting present on patchbox and buttplate. Wood excellent
with minor wear and marks.
Note: 2000 of this model were made under contract for the British government in 1855
for use in the Crimean War but saw little service.
