Scarce U.S. Sharps "Berdan Sharpshooters" New Model 1859 Army Rifle
Serial no. 54716, .52 caliber, 30-inch barrel with pedestal front sight and ladder-type
rear sight. Standard barrel markings. Three barrel bands. Drop-block action with pellet
primer system and standard markings. Double set-triggers. Walnut stocks with faint
cartouche present. Steel patchbox. Sling mounts.
Condition: Fine. Metal with mottled grey patina with scattered light
pitting and spotting. Wood very good with one period crack repair to fore-end and minor
dents and bruises. Old revarnish present. Bore good with strong rifling and minor spots of
pitting.
Note: "Berdan Sharps" are much sought after by collectors, primarily due to
the Civil War fame of this unit. This very gun is pictured in Roy Marcot's fine book on
Berdan's Sharpshooters. Author Frank Sellers discusses these arms on pages 71, 72, 73, 81
and 182 of his definitive book on Sharps rifles. A truly historic firearm.
