U.S. Sharps and Hankins Model 1862 "Short" Cavalry Single Shot Breechloading
Carbine
Serial no. 6083, .52 rimfire caliber, 18 3/4-inch barrel with adjustable elevation rear
sight. Left side of frame marked: Pat???/1859. Fire-blued hammer. Serpentine breech lever.
Saddle ring. Walnut stock. Brass buttplate. Sling mount. manufactured during the Civil
War.
Condition: Fine for this model. Browning and fading of blue finish
mixed with grey-brown patina. Minor spotting and pitting on right side of frame. Slight
traces of blue finish remaining on the hammer. Wood excellent with a few minor dents and
blemishes.
Note: Approximately 1000 of these "short" carbines were manufactured and were
used exclusively by the Third New York Volunteer Cavalry [see page 173, Sellers, Sharps
Firearms] Flayderman states that some were used by the 11th New York Cavalry as well [see
Flayderman 5F094]
