Rare Warner Breechloading Carbine
Serial no, 1575, .50 rimfire caliber, 20-inch round barrel with standard sights and
single steel barrel band. Brass frame, triggerguard and buttplate. Frame marked: James
Warner Springfield, Mass./Warner's/ Patent. Swing-open breech. Trigger-type extractor.
"L" inspector stamps. Standard walnut stocks with faint inspector cartouche.
Condition: Fine. Steel with grey patina and scattered light pitting.
Brass elements with mellow age patina. Wood showing a fine hairline crack and a few minor
marks.
Note: Approximately 4000 Warner carbines were purchased by the U.S. Army but nearly all
were purchased at auction after the Civil War and re-sold in Europe; less than 200 survive
today [see Flayderman, 9B-102].
