U.S. Martially Marked Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol by Springfield Armory, One of Small
Number of Prototypes
.54 caliber smoothbore, 8 1/2-inch round barrel, with US/JM/P on breech; LS on left
side at flat of barrel at breech; lock with American eagle and shield marking forward of
hammer; steel mountings, marking appearing to be J on triggerguard strap and sideplate;
brass flashpan; blue and case-hardened lock; oil-finished walnut stock with L on left side
above sideplate.
Condition: Very good. Gray patina, with pitting; some nicks. Stock
with nicks and light wear.
Note: Believed to be one of the 25 or 30 prototypes or models. Identical to Waters and
Johnson pistols, other than markings.
