Fine Classic Fullstock Pennsylvania Percussion Rifle by Rogers Brothers & Co.
.45 caliber, 42 1/8-inch unmarked octagonal barrel with dovetailed German silver
blade-type front sight and open rear sight. Engraved percussion lock mechanism marked:
Rogers & Brothers/Warranted. Handsome tiger maple stock with four recurved silver
wedge escutcheons having silver fish inlays between each wedge position. Lock flanked by
heart-shaped silver inlays. Oval silver wrist escutcheon and U-shaped silver inlay around
tang. Brass furniture. Ornately engraved scrolled brass patchbox and counterplate. Pierced
silver oval cheek inlay with saw-tooth edges and pierced 8-pointed star center. Wooden
ramrod.
Condition: Fine. Barrel and other steel elements showing smooth grey
patina with one or two minor spots of fine pitting present. Wood very good, showing even
wear and patina. Filled hole behind tang. Left side of forearm professionally restored.
Note: Rogers, John & Charles (Brothers) 1809-1846. General gunsmiths at 7 North
Second Street, 1809 to 1810, then at 52 High St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1810-1846.
Made flintlock and percussion Pennsylvania rifles and flintlock holster pistols. In 1814,
they bought the Valley Forge Iron Works at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, converting it to a
gunsmithery, and had the government contract for Model 1816 flintlock muskets.
