Rare Single Shot U.S. Martial Percussion Pistol by Unknown Maker, Marked JH and with
Serial Number 47
.54 caliber, smoothbore 8 1/2-inch round barrel; steel mountings; JH at barrel breech;
F at left flat of barrel breech; F and O marked on triggerguard forward tang; E on
sideplate. Two inspector cartouche markings on left side of oil-finished walnut stock, one
of them MPL. Lock comes to point at rear similar to flat lock Waters, but front of lock
beveled. Finely formed hammer and bolster; Nearly identical pistol number 45 known. Lock
plate with extra screw hole for mainspring (also found on flat lock, First Model, Waters).
Made with rear sight on upper tang. 47 on rear triggerguard tang near buttcap.
Condition: Very good. Steel with gray patina, pitting; stock with
marks, nicks and wear.
